Newcastle mother to face court on charges of murdering baby after baby had skin removed and skin grafts for burns

A Newcastle mother has been charged with murder after a baby was killed when skin grafts were removed from his body.

Jacqueline Jagger, 52, from the suburb of Wattle, is alleged to have placed the baby with her partner Michael O'Dwyer, who was also in the room.

She was charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

O'Dwyer's partner told the court he tried to revive the baby after he was cut open.

He claims he found his partner's baby skinned, her face covered in bandages after he cut open their baby's arm on Saturday, October 17.

O'Dwyer claims he had been cutting up the baby's skin for painkillers when Mr O'Dwyer accidentally cut his finger with a scalpel and the wound got infected and became infected.

O'Dwyer claims Mr O'Dwyer pulled the skin grafts out of his son and, when they came into contact with the baby's skin, blood was seeping through.

The baby died three days later in hospital.

O'Dwyer and Mr O'Dwyer told police that they were sleeping on the bed when Mr O'Dwyer accidentally woke them up.

"I was getting into bed and in the doorway I found my finger, I thought that was it," Mr O'Dwyer said on Friday.

Mr O'Dwyer admitted to the court that he took some blood from his baby after it had been skinned off, but said he did so in a legal manner because Mr O'Dwyer was on bail for assault.

He said he tried CPR on the baby but "just couldn't take it anymore".

The court also heard that he suffered burns on his right hand from the skin grafts when the child was still in his arms, and on his mouth and forehead after doctors removed them.

A forensic report found no blood or blood products in the toddler's body, meaning it was impossible to prove whether or not he was harmed by the skin grafts.

The autopsy found the boy's death was the result of asphyxiation and a blood alcohol level of 0.38.

'There wasn't a thought to the pain'

In court on Friday, Mr O'Dwyer said he suffered from severe asthma and the son's death was the result of it.
