Act searches for new chief magistrate of Mumbai is on an upswing, a senior official told Firstpost, adding the department's operations were being "robust".
In 2016 alone, there have been 19,064 searches by the MHA, compared to 13,700 in 2015, the official said.
"Search operations against people suspected to be associated with the banned outfit Dera Sacha Sauda were on an upswing in 2015-2016," he said.
The MHA is currently working with law enforcement agencies to track the movement of suspected banned outfits in the wake of recent terror attacks in Mumbai.
On March 16, 2015, the police in the city killed 15 people and injured over 200 when suspected militant outfit Jamaat-ud-Dawa's (JuD) bomb blast killed nine people in Connaught Place and a nearby park near Union Buildings.
JuD's group's members have been behind a series of deadly attacks against Indians in recent years, including those launched in 2013 in Mumbai, 2013 and 2013.
"We need new leadership in the department for the purpose of fighting terror groups like Dera Sacha Sauda and other banned outfits," the official said.
He said the MHA was planning "more sophisticated checks" on the websites of suspected banned outfits like Tehreek-e-I-Millul-Ansar (TIMA) and SIMI.
"We are looking at how far police and intelligence agencies will go to trace the terror leaders who used the websites," he said.
On Saturday, the police killed suspected terrorist Farooq Sheikh, who was identified as the mastermind of the attack on Dera Sacha Sauda.
"We have also taken notice of the threat of SIMI and Tehreek-e-I-Millul-Ansar and have foiled the last stages of their plot to launch attacks against the country," he was quoted as saying in a statement.

Tas senator lodges complaint against newspollution
Nawaz Sharif, chairman of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, lodged a complaint on Thursday against a television channel for allegedly broadcasting footage of two policemen slapping and abusing his wife.
"It is an unprecedented and outrageous act that the news channel has resorted to. Even the Supreme Court has called these acts 'unacceptable'," Nawaz Sharif told reporters after the ruling party's parliamentary executive and opposition alliance (PPMO) held their own meeting here and passed a resolution condemning the incident.
The prime minister's charge came at a time when the two police officers were on trial over allegations of assaulting and damaging property belonging to their relatives, who live in the city.
The incident took place in January. The police officers were on duty at the time when they heard a family members and witnesses were coming to the police station. The relatives accused the officers of assaulting them. The two policemen, however, claimed they were not doing anything wrong. The case has since moved to the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the ruling party leadership also condemned the "unjustified provocation" of its media house, accusing it of "staging a communal war".
Shahsideen Zafar Ali Shah, parliamentary affairs minister for the ruling party, said his party took notice of the incident and it was resolved to ensure that no such incident would be repeated.
He also told the PPMO: "We strongly condemn the unwarranted provocation of the media. This is an assault on the rights of men and women, and this is completely unacceptable."
Meanwhile, the ruling PPMO also released a statement, saying, "We are very concerned about this kind of communal violence. This incident has already been resolved to be thoroughly investigated. The investigation will continue immediately."
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during his weekly press conference, also defended his government's decision to hold a meeting with his cabinet colleagues and lawmakers to "prevent further developments before they become visible in the media and the public domain".
