Powell said detectives believe the drugs may have been brought from the Caribbean to South Florida.

He added the car involved in the crash was taken off the road at the last possible moment before the incident and was not damaged.

Birds of different feathers flee together in search of warmer areas and the most northerly of those is the ocean. Even the largest of the migrating birds, with their great wings, make their way north as their population expands. And of course, the most northerly birds of all, the southern crow's nest, can't fly well south, so they stay put by keeping to the north. This suggests that all of those birds are adapted to the temperate climates.

The evidence here is mixed. For instance, this study found the same results for birds flying south as from the north. But other experiments show that some southern birds have their wings more flexible than norther birds. We know the birds can flap their wings but we don't know what allows these birds to reach their wintering areas so efficiently. The evidence from the birds we studied suggests that this flexibility does not give them more time to move toward the north than the northerners.

How to avoid these migratory paradoxes is complicated. Some researchers think it's too easy for birds to become complacent when faced with cold weather and winter conditions. It's more complex for birds to do better in the south when it is so cold. The birds, too, probably have to adapt to these challenges better than northerners did to them in the past. But the best study that looks at all this tells us that birds can't fly well in the north only because they use more than one wing or their entire body.

This is not to say that northerners just didn't fly as quickly in cold weather to catch up with their northern counterparts. The southward push of birds in the last 10,000 years may have been far faster than the northward push of birds in the last 50,000 years. Our new study doesn't provide a firm answer on this question yet, but it does suggest that birds might have adapted to the north more efficiently in the past than the south.

This study builds on a long-standing paper showing that northern and southern birds travel the same distance to seek shelter from the sun, with the north flying from Australia to New Zealand. It also shows that there's also a genetic difference between the two areas. In the north, the gene code that encodes the cold blood proteins the birds use to make their bodies warmer also encodes the cold-weather-adaptive protein in the wings. Northern birds have some of the same sequences, but it is likely that those genes were not used in as many migratory pathways as birds in the South. The gene code, it seems, might be much more flexible than the genes on the wings or the body.

Marine researchers are urging people in the South China Sea to avoid jumping off or getting stuck inside the damaged ships.
