Election 2016 material sought by national library, city of Cambridge

On Tuesday, March 4, Cambridge Mayor Joe Cimperman and Cambridge City Councilwoman Susan Sussman launched Cambridge's "Search for the Future" to raise money and awareness for Cambridge's 2016 Library of Parliament and Cambridge Commons.

Cimperman, along with Mayor Sussman and Cambridge City Councilor David Pappas, said they were working with the University of Cambridge to find ways to transform existing libraries across the city. One of the options being studied is a collaborative project between the Cambridge library, Cambridge Community College, Cambridge County Libraries, and Cambridge County Council.

Cimperman said, "The Cambridge city government and Cambridge Council are currently looking into ways to fund and organize projects to restore and improve a wide variety of public infrastructure across the city, as well as the current system of libraries."

The city, while currently only looking at a range of ideas and proposals, will also be seeking contributions to the project as well, Cimperman said. The city is hoping to raise $10 million by the fall to hire a consultant and implement projects such as a new library parking lot and more funding.

Mainland cherry growers desperate to break into the US market face the daunting choice: sell their product in Europe or fight it on a global level.

The situation is ripe for cherry growers in South Africa, one of South Africa's biggest markets and one in which the local market is now growing at the fastest rate in history.

The current harvest is already bigger than the whole current annual sales in the whole of 2011.

The demand for South African cherry blossom has soared.

But when that demand is tempered by a global cherry market that is dominated by only one South African company, the situation can soon get ugly.

"The global market for cherry blossom, which is now about 5 to 8 percent, is about double the average in 2011. If the global demand continues its current rate, it will push us to the limit," said the president of a national association for fruit and cherry growers, Fikret Adele.

Adele said he and his group saw cherry blossom as a luxury item that South Africans will never be able to afford in the rest of the world.

"When South Africa's market is dominated by only one company, there is no incentive in terms of exports, no incentive to diversify our economy."

While the South African government has a responsibility to try to stop the cherry blossom trade, industry insiders say the most pressing issue is just how to fight it.

In recent years, South Africa's cherry blossom production has been declining.

According to the United Fruit (Union Fruit), annual production in 2009-2010 was up by a few thousand kilos per year, but only by a little over 2,000 kilos compared with the same period in 2011.

In 2012, there will now be more than 12,000 kilos of blossom.

The Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers (FDVP) expects global demand to peak at around 1 million kilos a year by 2016.


This will be followed by a sustained drop in South Africa's production and a collapse if the trade continues at the current rate.

Adele said there is very little government intervention.

"We are lucky in that we have some support from the federal government to tackle the problem of the global blossom market, but I think it's too late."

He said a country with a large supply base and limited supply, the US, is the best target for the industry.

"I think they have much more of a head start because the US is a huge consumer base.

"They are the big players in the market."
