Nick kyrgios happy to be home from wimbledon in canberra as part of Australian national squad
But while there was an element of elation at the prospect of playing against a talented and experienced French side, the focus now remains on the match against Team GB in Dubai in August, which will see the world's best players compete on the biggest stages in the world.
It will be a high profile clash at an event designed to celebrate the world's best athletes competing for the first time on the big stage, with more than a year of preparation already in place.
"Of course it's a great honour and we are excited," said Wawrinka. "It's the first time for me in eight years that I have played in front of this many fans.
"It's my last time playing in front of so many people and I hope that I'm doing it right this time because of the history here.
"I think the players here have done a great job of preparing well and I hope that the support and all the support from the fans will continue to grow over the next four weeks, so this is a great opportunity for us to go out there and perform well."
Kyrgios and Wawrinka both competed at Wimbledon in 2009. In 2010, the then champion was in good form against the world No. 8, after being a two-times champion.
It is a chance for the 28-year-old to show that he belongs at the top of his game again on home soil. He has now won three Grand Slam tournaments at Wimbledon and won his first ATP title at Roland Garros in 2015.
"I'm not really sure where the fans are going to want to sit, but it could be a little better than this," said Kyrgios. "It's still too early, it's too soon.
"The fans are very passionate. They want to see something special and they want to see some hard work, the kind that I think they are showing here today. It's a great feeling for me to represent their country in that way.
"At the start of the season, you might have doubts about whether you could have won the Australian Open if you only played the first 15 or 20 matches out of 30 or what will happen on Wimbledon Day.
"I'm just excited for this, it gives me the opportunity to go out there, show what I can do and show my skills and play really well. The fans are so passionate, it's a great experience and I hope to go out with a win every day and hopefully come out a winner."
There is also the possibility of a return to the WTA Finals after their disappointing 4-0 loss to Argentina on Wednesday.

Chelsea target juventus midfielder nedved
'They just wanted to buy me because I'm a good player - they never asked me anything. The club offered me about $5 million and I refused to sell.'
The 35-year-old's arrival would give Juventus a new man of the match option on their striker, Enzo Amatricci who missed the start of the season because of knee surgery.
Barca also had interest from Manchester City, but are thought to have failed to land Napoli midfielder Giorgio Chiellini in the January transfer window.
New striker Enzo Amatricci will be the man for Barca if their deal is to be signed to play in the Champions League
Meanwhile, the Italian outfit's new coach Massimiliano Allegri insists the Bianconeri have not lost the kind of mentality that saw them end a run of eight years without reaching the final of the Champions League.
"For me, this is a new club that has different personalities, and that's why the competition is so important," he said.
"Barcelona are an exceptional group with a great spirit. At the start, they wanted to play in the Champions League, but at the end they want to compete in the Champions League.
"It takes time, it takes maturity, it takes the right players to succeed."
